A Full World

Ocarina of Time was revolutionary when it first came out. The open world, traveling back and forth through time, and plenty more. Though many of its features are things we now take for granted, I think the game is still just as great now as it was back then.

The gameplay is overall smooth and easy to play, and any minor irritations were mostly fixed up in the 3Ds remake or in totally legal fan restorations. I won't let revisionists say that the Water Temple was good, actually. It still sucks. Just keep a walkthrough with you at all times, it'll make it less confusing.

The story isn't breaking any new ground, especially since most of us know the gist of what happens by now. If you know very little about the story, though, then please go in blind. It's gotta be really fun to experience the twists and turns without it having been spoiled for you. It's a classic Good vs Evil, with teeny bits of nuance sprinkled in here and there.

The thing that I like the most about OOT, though, is just how full the land of Hyrule feels. No region feels empty! The towns feel lived in, the political systems are already established, the cultures of the other races feel unique and vibrant...In a lot of earlier Zelda games, Hyrule felt more like a generic fantasy backdrop. But here, it feels like a real place that Link can explore. A living, breathing space, even if it's limited to 64 polygons.
