Alola~!

Plenty of people say that the Unova games have the best story in the mainline Pokémon franchise. I can’t say that’s wrong, necessarily, but I can say that I think Alola just barely beats it out. I have not yet played US/UM, but base game Sun and Moon is my favorite mainline Pokémon story, without question.

The gameplay isn’t as unique as, say, the Legends games, but it did shake up the formula. Trials instead of gyms, the Island Kahunas instead of the traditional Elite 4, Totem Pokémon…we take some of these for granted now, since it’s sorta becoming the new norm. But to my knowledge, Sun and Moon did it first, and boy did they do it great!

I hold the characters from Alola near and dear to my heart. Lillie is quite possibly my favorite character in the whole franchise. Team Skull and The Aether Foundation doubling up as the resident evil teams is a unique choice. I feel like they saw everyone complain about how unmemorable Team Flare was, then decided to make two incredibly memorable teams to make up for it.

Z-Moves aren’t my favorite gimmick, but they’re not bad at all. Some of the animations could be a bit better, but the low quality can honestly make them look pretty hilarious. And you eventually get Mega-Evolution back, which is my favorite gimmick. So it balances itself out!

There’s so much more to talk about. Poképelago, the Ultra Beasts, the expansive post-game content. But I’ll end it here for the sake of brevity. If you’re interested, go play it for yourself! It’s an excellent game.
