Tracing New Paths in Familiar Territory: Pokémon Omega Ruby

Back in 2014, when Game Freak decided to revisit the Hoenn region with "Pokémon Omega Ruby," fans of the original were torn between nostalgia and anticipation. The game, a remake of the classic Game Boy Advance title, promised not just a graphical overhaul but an enriched experience brimming with new content. Upon release, it became clear that this was more than just a stroll down memory lane,it was a vibrant reimagining.

The Experience

In "Pokémon Omega Ruby," you step into the shoes of an enthusiastic Pokémon Trainer tasked with thwarting the ambitions of Team Magma. The game unfolds in a lush world teeming with diverse Pokémon species and dynamic weather effects that add layers to exploration. The central gameplay loop is as addicting as ever: catch, train, and battle while unearthing Hoenn’s secrets. With Mega Evolutions and Primal Reversions shaking up battles, even seasoned players find new strategies to explore.

What Sets It Apart

The game is celebrated for its vibrant art direction that injects life into every corner of Hoenn. Music plays a crucial role too, with remastered tunes that pay homage to the original while elevating emotional beats. "Omega Ruby" also introduces the soaring mechanic,a breathtaking feature allowing trainers to fly over landscapes on Latios or Latias, transforming travel into an adventure itself. In terms of narrative depth and technical polish, this installment solidifies its place as a standout entry in both the Pokémon series and RPGs at large.

Who Should Play This

"Pokémon Omega Ruby" is designed for both newcomers eager to dive into a timeless universe and veterans hungry for updated challenges. With around 25-35 hours for mainline completion, it’s available exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS. Prior knowledge from earlier games enhances appreciation but isn’t mandatory, making it accessible yet richly rewarding for all adventurers aiming to become Pokémon Masters yet again.

A Gold Standard for Remakes

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are prime examples of what a good remake looks like. It improves upon the original in many ways, while still maintaining its original characters, plot, and region. Plus it adds Mega Evolution into the mix, and that's my favorite gimmick.

If you think pretty much any of the updated character designs are worse than the original, I hate to say it but I think that's the copium talking. There's obviously a charm to the originals, but I'd argue that the updated designs have more character than the originals ever did. I mean, look at Brawly for example. His original design was just...a guy. With his updated one, he looks more like a fighting type gym leader, as well as a surfer! And don't even get me started with Team Aqua's glow-up. Every single member look a thousand times better than they did before.

The Primal forms for the Legendaries was really neat. Mega Rayquaza is a BEAST, as anyone who knows anything about the competitive scene can tell you. And flying around on Mega Latios/Latias is amazing! It's really fun flying over the entire region, even if it's only got the graphics of a 3DS game.

There's a ton of great post-game content too. Contests, Delta Episode, finding all the legendaries...it's a great Pokemon game, and I can't think of anything that was a downgrade from the originals (other than losing the Battle Frontier).
