Kingdom Hearts II: The Fantastical Symphony of Disney and Final Fantasy

When Square Enix released "Kingdom Hearts II" in 2005, fans were eager to see if the magic of its predecessor could be bottled twice. And boy, did it deliver. The sequel not only met expectations but somehow managed to expand its universe in ways that made both Disney devotees and RPG enthusiasts swoon. Japanese and Western audiences alike were captivated by this improbable yet harmonious blend of worlds.

The Experience

In "Kingdom Hearts II," you resume control of Sora, the spiky-haired Keyblade wielder on a quest to find his friends across a myriad of beautifully reimagined Disney worlds. From the lush landscapes of Pride Lands to the bustling streets of Twilight Town, each setting serves as a backdrop for battles that are as strategic as they are visually stunning. The game evolves from simple hack-and-slash mechanics into an intricate ballet where timing and strategy dictate your success.

What Sets It Apart

The visual splendor is matched by a stirring score from composer Yoko Shimomura, whose music adds emotional depth to every cutscene and boss fight. Cinematic storytelling is taken up several notches with this installment, diving deeper into themes like identity and friendship without losing the whimsical charm players love about the series. Within Square Enix's storied catalog, "Kingdom Hearts II" stands out for daring to fuse disparate universes into a cohesive narrative tapestry.

Who Should Play This

If you've ever wondered what happens when Final Fantasy meets Mickey Mouse, this one's for you. Clocking in at around 30-40 hours depending on your play style, it's accessible enough for newcomers yet rewarding for series veterans looking to catch every Easter egg and plot twist. Originally available on PlayStation 2, it has since been remastered for newer consoles, offering greater accessibility than ever before.

Peak

I love Kingdom Hearts 2. The gameplay, the story, the artsyle, everything about it is practically perfect. Pretty much any complaint I had about the first game was remedied in its sequel. The platforming is streamlined and made far less tedious, plus the Gummi Ship minigames are actually fun and engaging!

The combat is my standard for games of its kind. I'm serious. I love how you can use different abilities to find a combat style that's more comfortable for you. And as you level up, you get some really overpowered ones that makes you feel like you've truly grown since the start. Reaction commands are also amazing! It made me sad that it took until KH3 to bring them back. I don't usually like quicktime events, but reaction commands are their own thing. They also always look super cool, so that's a plus.

A complaint I can understand is how long the opening segment with Roxas is. For when you're going through the game for the first time, it's great, since it builds up suspense and gets you invested. When you're replaying it, I can see how it can be a bit tedious. But honestly, a lot of the minigames in the segment are really fun, anyway.

For people who actually understand the story, this entry is great. For those who don't...it still looks cool. Just watch all the people with the cool cloaks go around. It's worth it.

(Atlantica does still suck pretty bad, though. I can't really argue with that.)

Another classic

Kingdom Hearts II is where the series really locks in as something special. The combat is faster, smoother, and far more satisfying than the first game, making it an easy step up in pure gameplay. The story is still gloriously convoluted, of course, but that confusion is part of the charm at this point. Between the stylish action, emotional highs, iconic Disney-world hopping, and some of the best moments in the entire franchise, Kingdom Hearts II remains a fan favorite for a reason. Messy, heartfelt, and ridiculously fun, it is one of the series’ high points. Don't expect to understand the story though.
