The moment you step into the "Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep" universe, you'll sense a distinct alchemy. Originally released on the PlayStation Portable, this game takes the ambitious leap of merging Disney's whimsical charm with the intricate lore of Square Enix's Final Fantasy. Praised for its daring storyline and advanced combat system, it carved out a niche in both Western and Japanese gaming communities.

The Experience

Dive into a captivating universe where you'll follow three protagonists,Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, each with their own intertwining storylines. Set as a prequel to the original series, this installment delves deep into the lore, exploring themes of friendship and destiny. The gameplay blends action RPG mechanics with real-time combat, offering a satisfying loop as you unlock new abilities through an innovative deck command system. Every world visited is infused with Disney magic, serving as both battlefield and playground.

Yoko Shimomura's score elevates every moment, weaving nostalgia with fresh melodies. Notably, this title introduces the Command Board,a strategic minigame rewarding exploration and tactical acumen. 3 Games in 1!

Birth By Sleep is yet another banger in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. As always, the story is a crazy mess, but at this point if that’s not what you expect from KH then that’s your own problem.

It’s really fun to play as 3 separate characters! Seeing their stories intertwine as you play one campaign after another is always neat, and their different playstyles are really fun. I think Aqua’s is the easiest to cheese.

As always, it’s great to travel to different Disney worlds and explore with the characters you love. Since BBS is the earliest game in the series (excluding the mobile games), you get to see some of the worlds of characters you never got to in, say, KH1.

I always found it funny that Master Eraqus is Mark Hamill, while Xehanort is Leonard Nimoy. That had to have been on purpose, right? But also, I want to praise the performance of Jesse McCartney. He portrayed Roxas earlier in the series (later in the timeline of the games, though), and did so incredibly. Despite the characters looking identical, his performance as Ventus is so different than Roxas! It would’ve been very easy to just repeat the same performance, but he didn’t. Ventus and Roxas are clearly separate characters, and I appreciate it.

If you like KH, BBS is worth playing. And even if you don’t like the story but like the combat, it’s worth a play too!

What is going on? No idea, but you do get a big key so its fun.

Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is one of those games that raises the eternal series question: what is even going on? Honestly, no idea. And to be fair, you definitely do not need to play it to understand the overall story, because let’s be real, you probably still won’t. But as a side adventure for fans of the series, it is a fun one. The different playable characters keep things interesting, the combat is enjoyable, and it delivers more of that weird, heartfelt Kingdom Hearts energy. Confusing? Absolutely. Worth it for fans? Sure.
