The Magical Fusion of Disney and Fantasy

When Square Enix announced a game that combined their fantasy world-building with classic Disney characters, the gaming community was more than intrigued,it was downright baffled. Yet when "Kingdom Hearts" dropped in 2002, it seamlessly wove together these disparate universes. A bizarre yet enchanting cocktail, it somehow felt like it was meant to be all along.

The Experience

Imagine wielding a giant key as you journey through meticulously crafted worlds inspired by beloved Disney films. You follow Sora, a plucky protagonist with spiky hair and an oversized heart, on his quest to find his friends and restore order. The gameplay loop is addictive: dynamic real-time battles mixed with exploration make each Disney world feel distinct yet connected. With every world you visit, there's a new story thread pulling you further into Sora's emotional odyssey.

What Sets It Apart

The art direction, helmed by the legendary Tetsuya Nomura, is a visual feast that captivates the child in all of us while challenging our grown-up gaming skills. But it's not just eye candy; Kingdom Hearts' orchestral score by Yoko Shimomura elevates the entire experience into an auditory symphony of nostalgia and adventure. This game revolutionizes action-RPGs by melding them with platforming elements and intricate storytelling,an alchemy that has become part of Square Enix's signature repertoire.

Who Should Play This

If you're someone who grew up on both Final Fantasy and Disney classics, this is your unicorn,a rare gem that marries two seemingly incompatible worlds effortlessly. Available on PlayStation platforms, it's welcoming to newcomers while providing depth for seasoned RPG veterans. With an average playtime of 30-40 hours, it's perfect for those seeking an epic adventure without needing to dive into previous series entries first.

An Amazing Start

Kingdom Hearts is a wonderful franchise, and its first game is no exception. It starts out strong, and only improves from this entry forward.

I give it 4 stars rather than 5 because it’s got some gameplay issues that later entries in the series fix. My biggest issues are the platforming and the Gummi Ship. The platforming isn’t super polished, and I was always glad they focused less on it in later games (at least until they added Flowmotion, which was way better). The Gummi Ship minigames are a slog. They take way too long and they’re essentially just flying in a straight line. Kingdom Hearts 2 did it way better.

Other than that, the gameplay is solid! The story can be…confusing, to say the least. It only gets more insane from here. But frankly, I love it. I love the insane story, I love the characters, and I love the world this story establishes. And I love the soundtrack! Yoko Shimomura can do no wrong.

Kingdom Hearts is most certainly not for everyone. If you don’t like action gameplay, Disney, or Final Fantasy, you won’t like this. But if you’re intrigued by the weirdness, then go ahead and try the Kingdom Hearts franchise out, starting right here! I certainly didn’t regret it.

An absolute classic

Kingdom Hearts is an absolute classic that still holds up surprisingly well. Will you fully understand the story? Probably not. Will the controls feel a little clunky if you did not play it 20 years ago? Also yes. But even with its age, it remains a must-play for any gamer, if only to appreciate its historical value and the sheer audacity of its Disney-meets-anime premise. It is charming, weird, sincere, and completely unforgettable. Also, you get to see Mickey Mouse himself be shirtless, so, you know.
