Obi-Wan Kenobi
A new John Williams theme for a Jedi in hiding
For the 1977 Star Wars film, John Williams wrote a theme for Obi-Wan Kenobi that later became associated with the Force in general. Williams had never written a standalone theme for Kenobi, the only major character of that film without one, so he asked Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy to let him compose a new theme for this series. Natalie Holt wrote the rest of the score, the first woman to score a live-action Star Wars project.
The project started as a spin-off film and was reworked as a six-episode series for Disney+ after the commercial failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018). Lucasfilm halted it in January 2020 because it was unhappy with the scripts, and Joby Harold rewrote them as showrunner. Deborah Chow directed all six episodes, filmed in Los Angeles from May 2021 on the StageCraft video wall already used for The Mandalorian.
The Story
Ten years after the Jedi Order was all but destroyed, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) lives in hiding on the planet Tatooine, where he watches over the young Luke Skywalker. When the Empire's Jedi hunters, the Inquisitors, kidnap ten-year-old Princess Leia to draw him out, Kenobi leaves Tatooine to rescue her.
The mission sets Kenobi against his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker, now Darth Vader, whom he believed to be dead. Hayden Christensen returns to the role twenty years after the prequel films, Vivien Lyra Blair plays Leia, and Moses Ingram plays Reva, an Inquisitor obsessed with finding Kenobi.
The Ideal Audience
The six episodes run 36 to 53 minutes and were released on Disney+ between 27 May and 22 June 2022. The series is rated TV-14 in the United States, and Common Sense Media recommends it from age 10, noting frequent lightsaber and laser gun fights and a violent attack on a classroom in the first episode. Disney+ added a content warning to three episodes, because scenes of violence against children recalled the Robb Elementary School shooting of 24 May 2022.
