The Force Awakens in Animated Form

When Star Wars: Rebels first aired, it brought the galaxy far, far away to the small screen with a freshness that caught many by surprise. This animated series, hailed for revitalizing interest in the Star Wars universe post-Clone Wars, deftly balances light-hearted adventure with the weight of resistance against tyranny.

The Story

Set between the events of Episode III and IV, Star Wars: Rebels follows a ragtag group of rebels on the spaceship Ghost as they fight against the evil Galactic Empire. At its heart is young Ezra Bridger, a spirited orphan who discovers his connection to the Force. Together with his diverse crew, including a Jedi Knight and a tough-as-nails pilot, Ezra embarks on missions that challenge both their resolve and their camaraderie.

Animation and Artistic Direction

The series shines with its vibrant animation and unique art style courtesy of Lucasfilm Animation. Bright color palettes contrast sharply with the darker themes of imperial oppression. The aesthetic is reminiscent of Ralph McQuarrie's original concept art for Star Wars films,a delightful nod for longtime fans. Combined with Kevin Kiner's compelling score, which tastefully echoes John Williams' iconic melodies, it creates an immersive experience that feels both familiar and new.

The Ideal Audience

This TV series comprises four seasons with 75 episodes in total. It's an accessible entry point for those new to Star Wars lore while rewarding longtime fans with deeper insights into beloved elements from the main saga. Though primarily family-friendly, its mature undertones offer enough complexity to engage adult viewers as well.

Not Just A Good Sequel But A Good Show

I remember being fairly bitter when Rebels first came out. I was still upset about the Clone Wars’ cancellation, so while I was willing to watch the new show, I, admittedly, didn’t do it in good faith. Longing for the prequel era and not being too fond of the new art style, I wound up dropping the show after a few episodes and only tuning in when a Clone Wars character showed up. It’s years later now, and I routinely find myself returning to Rebels and just being blown away. The exploration of Kanan and Ezra’s relationship and how they ultimately contribute to the Rebellion is beautifully told. The Ghost Crew feels like a legitimate family. It’s amazing to see the lengths they go to keep each other safe and how this often complicates their efforts to overthrow the Empire. I still prefer the Clone Wars art style, and I still think the shift to a more “family friendly” channel limits the stories and characters at times. But it’s a great show, and I would recommend it to fans of the Clone Wars, the prequel and original trilogies, and other shows that touch upon the found family trope.
