Book of Boba Fett
Filmed as if it were the third season of The Mandalorian
Two weeks into filming, members of the cast and crew learned that they were not making the third season of The Mandalorian but a separate series. The production worked under the title Buccaneer and numbered the episodes as if they belonged to that third season, so the first one was called 301 rather than 101. Filming took place in Los Angeles on the StageCraft video wall also used for The Mandalorian, and ended in June 2021.
Jon Favreau, the creator of The Mandalorian, wrote all seven episodes, the sixth with Dave Filoni, and ran the series for Lucasfilm with Robert Rodriguez, who directed three of them. Ludwig Göransson composed the main themes and Joseph Shirley the score.
The Story
After the events of Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), the bounty hunter Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) and the mercenary Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) take over the territory on the planet Tatooine once controlled by the crime lord Jabba the Hutt. Flashbacks show how Fett found a new family in a tribe of Tusken Raiders.
To consolidate his power, Fett calls on the Mandalorian, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), while Djarin's young ward Grogu trains as a Jedi with Luke Skywalker. Cad Bane, a bounty hunter from the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, appears here in live action for the first time.
The Ideal Audience
The seven episodes, 39 to 59 minutes long, were released weekly on Disney+ between 29 December 2021 and 9 February 2022. The final episode drew the largest audience of any Star Wars series on Disney+ up to that point, and the series won a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy for its visual effects. It is rated TV-14 in the United States, and Common Sense Media recommends it from age 11, noting violent action throughout, with martial arts, gunfights and the killing of animal-like creatures.
