The Haunting Echoes of "The Handmaid's Tale"

"The Handmaid's Tale" arrives in 2017 with a resonance that feels eerily prescient. Adapted from Margaret Atwood's seminal novel, its portrayal of a dystopian society reverberates in the contemporary zeitgeist. Produced by Hulu, this series captures imaginations and sparked discussions far beyond the small screen.

The Concept

Set in a totalitarian regime known as Gilead, "The Handmaid's Tale" centers on June Osborne, played by Elisabeth Moss. As one of the few fertile women known as handmaids, June must navigate a world stripped of freedom and individuality. In Season 1, her journey under Gilead's oppressive rule juxtaposes chilling fear with defiant hope. The tone is stark and relentless, capturing the audience in its vice-like grip.

The Series Identity

The series distinguishes itself with its harrowing yet exquisite visual storytelling and impeccable performances. Moss’s portrayal is raw, delivering a visceral performance that’s difficult to forget. Unlike other dystopian narratives like "Black Mirror," it focuses deeply on feminine experience under authoritarian oppression. With Bruce Miller at the helm as showrunner, it delves into themes of power, resistance, and identity with a rare intensity.

Viewing Guide

This completed series unfolds over six provocative seasons. Each episode runs approximately 50 minutes, available on Hulu. It's ideally suited for mature audiences ready to confront challenging themes like misogyny and political subjugation. Be prepared: it doesn't shy away from depicting harsh realities.

Lacks pace

There was a lot of buzz about this series, so I wanted to give it a try.
It starts off slowly... Given the hype, I forced myself to stay patient for 3-4 episodes... But it was still just as slow.

I gave up on it.

Sometimes plodding but always building to something

Having read the book and its sequel multiple times, I highly anticipated the release of this show. While it extended beyond the events of the book after roughly one season, the creators found new and interesting directions to take the show each season.

The sets used in the show and the pristine New England neighborhoods make for an eerie twist on the dystopian genre, which is usually characterized by rubble and destruction. The cinematography is also highly artful, often using on razor-thin depth of field. The costumes are also top-notch, though I'm slightly biased because one of the main costume designers lives near me.

On the negative side, the show is intense and sometimes hard to binge. It's also a little slow and overly relies on extreme close-ups of the protagonist to convey emotion (though Elizabeth Moss is up to the task). I wish the sequel novel had been released a little earlier so the series could tie to it more explicitly, but the show's final season did set up the novel (and its upcoming series) pretty well in the end.
