A Capitol modeled on the Berlin of the 1950s and 1960s

For the Capitol of Panem, the German production designer Uli Hanisch drew on the Berlin of the 1950s and 1960s, using locations such as Strausberger Platz and the Altes Museum, later altered digitally. The exterior of the arena is the Olympiastadion, digitally raised by three storeys. District 12 was shot in the Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord, with more than 3,000 extras in August 2022.

Francis Lawrence, who directed the three previous films in the series, shot this one for Lionsgate in Poland and Germany in 2022, for a release in November 2023. Rachel Zegler performed her character's songs live, in versions produced by Dave Cobb that draw heavily on Appalachian folk music, and James Newton Howard wrote the score.

The Story

Six decades before he becomes President Snow, the 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is chosen to mentor a tribute in the 10th Hunger Games. He hopes to use the Plinth Prize, a scholarship awarded to the winning tribute's mentor, to restore his family's prosperity. He is assigned Lucy Gray Baird from District 12, who sings to the crowd during the televised reaping ceremony.

The film adapts The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the 2020 novel by Suzanne Collins, from a screenplay by Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt. According to Lesslie, Collins insisted that everything about Lucy Gray stay limited to what Snow can witness. Tom Blyth plays Snow, alongside Viola Davis as the Head Gamemaker and Peter Dinklage as the dean of the Academy.

The Ideal Audience

The film runs 157 minutes and is rated PG-13 in the United States. Common Sense Media recommends it from age 14, citing tributes who kill one another with spears, axes, knives and poison, snake bites and executions by hanging or shooting.

Critics were divided: Rotten Tomatoes counted 64 percent positive reviews among 243, and CinemaScore audiences gave it a B+, the lowest grade of the franchise. The film grossed $361.8 million worldwide on a $100 million budget, and we recommend it to viewers who want to see the Games from the side of the Capitol.

One of the best Hunger Games films

Much like the novel it was derived from, this movie is more mature and deft than the original Hunger Games trilogy. I found myself really liking Corio Snow and kept wishing he'd stay likeable instead of making the character change we all knew was coming thanks to the original movies. I haven't rewatched the first movies in years, but this one is always worth a rewatch. It's a genuinely great return to the world of the original films.
