A Somewhat Promising Start
Let it be known that I think that the film LOOKS very good. It looks like a Star Wars movie! The sets, the costumes, the effects, it’s all very well done. I also have absolutely no ill will toward the actors. This is a fantastic cast, and their acting was never unbelievable or poor.
The thing about Episode 7 is, it’s pretty much just Episode 4. To start this new trilogy, they did the first episode of the original trilogy, but bigger. I’m absolutely NOT the first person to point this out. Episode 4 (A New Hope) is, in fact, a very good movie. So when you do it again, you still get a pretty good movie. When I first saw Episode 7 in theaters, I came out of it happy! I enjoyed what I saw, and was looking forward to the rest of the trilogy.
The problem is that now, the rest of the trilogy is out, and all I can think of while watching it here is the wasted potential. Rey, Poe, and Finn all had the makings of great protagonists. But knowing how they’ll be squandered in the next two movies just makes me kinda depressed rewatching this.
If you saw it in theaters when it came out, I’d say just keep that fond memory alive and don’t watch it again. I’ve heard some first-timers to the Star Wars franchise say they actually like the sequel trilogy quite a bit though, so hey? Who knows.
