Mass Effect
Three coloured endings triggered the first large-scale consumer revolt in video games. BioWare had spent five years promising that every choice would carry across a trilogy, and in March 2012 several million players concluded the promise had not been kept. The studio rewrote the ending and gave it away three months later.
A save file that follows you across three games
Mass Effect came out in 2007 as a science-fiction role-playing game with conversation wheels and a shooting system BioWare had never built before.
Its real design was the save file. Decisions made in the first game, including which characters died, were read by Mass Effect 2 in 2010 and again by Mass Effect 3. No series had attempted persistence at that scale.
Mass Effect 2 is generally held to be the high point, at 96 on Metacritic: a recruitment structure where the final mission kills the crew members the player neglected to prepare.
March 2012: the ending, the petition and the regulator
Mass Effect 3 shipped with a conclusion offering three choices distinguished mainly by colour, in which the accumulated decisions of five years had little visible weight.
Players organised. A campaign called Retake Mass Effect raised money for charity to stay credible, and a complaint was filed with the United States Federal Trade Commission over false advertising.
BioWare released the Extended Cut in June 2012, free, adding roughly ninety minutes of ending material. No studio had rewritten a finished game's conclusion under that kind of pressure before, and publishers have treated player reaction as a post-release risk ever since.
Andromeda, and a studio that lost five years
Mass Effect: Andromeda moved to a new galaxy in 2017 with a different team and a development history of repeated restarts. Its facial animation was broken enough to become a meme within days of release.
The game still scored 71, which is not a disaster, but it followed three entries averaging above 90 and the fall was read as one. Electronic Arts put the series on hold. A novel, Mass Effect: Andromeda, continued the story in 2018 for the readers who stayed.
A fourth game was announced in 2020 and remains unreleased. The trilogy was reissued in 2021 and sold well, which is its own comment.
What a conversation wheel changed
The dialogue wheel put tone before content: the player picks an attitude, not a sentence. Almost every narrative game since has copied the idea, including studios that have criticised it.
And the argument about the ending established something publishers had not accepted before: an audience that has invested a hundred hours believes it holds a stake in the conclusion.
That belief is now a standing condition of releasing a long-running series, whether studios welcome it or not.
