Holmes, But Make It Neon

Some detective stories chase clues. This one chases patterns inside a future city that never stops humming. Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century takes the classic partnership of genius and deduction and slams it into a world of surveillance, technology, and crimes that feel engineered for headlines.

The Story

This TV anime follows Sherlock Holmes and a younger Watson as they operate across a 22nd-century landscape of advanced systems and escalating threats. Instead of simply “solving” mysteries, the series keeps asking what evidence even means when the world can record, predict, and manipulate reality. Each case turns into a logic contest with both culprits and institutions, as Holmes hunts for the human motive beneath the machine-made surface. It adapts the broader idea of Conan Doyle’s Holmes tradition into an original futuristic mystery framework.

Animation and Artistic Direction

Visually, it leans into crisp lines, high-contrast lighting, and clean sci-fi design rather than heavy fantasy grit. Action and investigation beats move with a steady rhythm, letting faces and gestures do some of the work that flashy effects might steal. The soundtrack supports the mood with tense, modern textures, so even quiet scenes feel charged. The overall look distinguishes itself by treating “the future” as a precise atmosphere, not a carnival.

The Ideal Audience

If you like deduction-first storytelling and mysteries that reward attention, you will probably click with this one fast. It is a TV series with a typical episode format, which makes it easier to sample, but still satisfying if you commit. Newcomers can jump in, yet this anime plays especially well for fans of puzzle plotting, crime drama tone, and Holmes-style cold reasoning.

Still A Better Adaptation Than BBC Sherlock

This show is incredibly silly based on premise alone. But honestly, it does more with its premise than I expected it would. Instead of just being a version of Sherlock Holmes born in the 22nd Century, this is the actual Victorian man, revived from the dead, and placed into a time and London he is unfamiliar with. Since this show isn't exactly home to the deepest writing, we don't see it affect him for too long. But when the show allows us to, it's really interesting.

The thing is, Watson wasn't revived with him. His Watson is a police robot, or compudroid, that read Watson's writings and took on his personality. And oh my God, I love it. We do get an entire episode dedicated to the fact that Holmes is unwilling to accept this machine as a replacement for the real John Watson, the man with whom he shared so much of his life. He slowly warms up to him, and eventually accepts him as a suitable Watson, even if he isn't the original. It's surprisingly heartwarming!

Some of the stories adapted to this new setting were actually pretty interesting. I like how they updated certain aspects for this future timeline. Not every one is a winner, but there's some good stuff in there if you look. Moriarty is pretty generic (and American?), sadly. He's also got a French sidekick now, who I do kinda like. There's also Beth Lestrade, meant to be the descendant of the inspector of the same last name. She's alright. I don't love her, but I think she's a decent character.

I wish the show could've done more with what it had, but what it did was immensely interesting. It's almost an equivalent to, like, Batman Beyond in terms of adaptation. At least it allowed Holmes to be a whole person, instead of the "highly functioning sociopath" of the BBC adaptation. (I have a MASSIVE beef with BBC Sherlock, but this is not the time or the place for that.)
