Nine Awards at The Game Awards. One Studio's First Game.

When Sandfall Interactive, a studio of roughly thirty developers based in Montpellier, released their debut title on 24 April 2025, few predicted the scale of what followed. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 went on to win nine awards at The Game Awards 2025, including Game of the Year, setting a new record for the ceremony. It then swept all five major game award shows, a feat only Baldur's Gate 3 had achieved before it.

Director Guillaume Broche, a former Ubisoft developer, built the project around a specific ambition: a high-fidelity turn-based RPG in the tradition of Final Fantasy and Persona, a genre he felt AAA studios had abandoned. The result runs on Unreal Engine 5, with lighting and rendering that critics described as "dreamily intoxicating." Composers Lorien Testard and Alice Duport-Percier delivered a score so distinctive it topped Billboard's Classical Albums Chart for six consecutive weeks.

The Experience

The game is set in a dark fantasy Belle Époque world where an entity called the Paintress erases everyone above an ever-decreasing age each year. Players lead Expedition 33, a group of volunteers sent to stop her before she can paint again. Combat is turn-based but demands real-time precision: attacks require timed inputs, and dodging or parrying enemy strikes mid-battle rewards players with ability points and counterattack windows.

The cast includes Charlie Cox, Andy Serkis, Ben Starr, and Jennifer English, whose performance won multiple awards. We think the voice work is inseparable from why the story lands as hard as it does.

Who Should Play This

The game is available on PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, and launched day one on Xbox Game Pass. It is a single-player experience with multiple difficulty options and a New Game Plus mode. Players who bounced off passive turn-based systems will find the active combat demands genuine engagement throughout.

A Gorgeous, Turn-Based Masterpiece

If you miss the golden age of turn-based RPGs but want something that looks and feels modern, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is exactly what you need.
The story is deeply gripping. Once a year, a mysterious being called the Paintress wakes up and paints a number on a monolith. Everyone of that age instantly turns to dust. This year, she’s about to paint "33," and a brave group of characters sets out on a final, desperate mission to destroy her before she can wipe them out.

The French Expedition

This game is a masterpiece on every front. The landscapes, the characters, the dialogue, the turn-based gameplay, the NPCs, the battles and different bosses, but especially the music. From the moment you launch the game, you're transported to another universe, the charisma of the era, like the Middle Ages but more modern, the flying leaves, the background melody that puts you in a mood that's both relaxed and sad, a prologue that already brings tears to your eyes - in short, a French gem that has won its share of Game Awards and deserves them on every point. Each section of the open world is a beautiful discovery, the calm sequences around the campfire let you recover a bit from your emotions, the battles are very well done, each character has their own unique talent. Even those who aren't used to RPGs or turn-based combat (like the old Final Fantasy games), the gameplay is very simple, the explanations are crystal clear, you understand everything from the prologue, the system is very well made. I absolutely recommend this game, you won't be disappointed on any point - for me, everything is perfect, each landscape leaves you speechless, the music grabs you by the gut, the charm and personality of the characters you play each have their own story and are endearing.

For those who come after!

What a journey this game was, I was hesitant that it was too good to be true but... there really is a reason why they got 9 awards at the Game Awards. The characters are good (shout out to my boy Ben Starr being a peak voice actor), the fight system was easy to learn because it's very similar to Persona's turn based system. It was a blast and I love everything about it.
