Absolutely Incredible
I don’t know how the game compares to the original apart from certain story beats, as I have yet to play the origins PS1 FF7. But in my opinion, it’s a great mix of action elements (like in Kingdom Hearts!) and the traditional turn-based RPG elements associated with the FF franchise. The soundtrack is incredible, which I did expect. Nomura games having a great soundtrack is pretty much a given.
I got attached to each of the main characters so fast, it’s genuinely impressive. Even if I knew certain characters were going to die, I still couldn’t help but like them, even if I wanted to emotionally distance myself. The voice cast is incredible, and I even recognized a few of them here and there. Did not expect to see John DiMaggio here, but I am NOT complaining.
The only complaint I can think of is some of the skyboxes look pretty bad. There’s a section of the game “lovingly” referred to as Midgar.PNG. It’s only really a problem if you’re paying close attention to the background, but once you see it it’s VERY noticeable.
This is a great first exposure to the story of one of the most iconic games of all time. Also Yuffie best girl don’t @ me
