The character designs that defined a generation of animation, and then a manga that outlasted the series: Yoshiyuki Sadamoto did both.

Sadamoto is a character designer and manga artist. He wrote and drew the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga, a version of the story he had designed for the screen, published across nearly twenty years and diverging steadily from the animation in emphasis, interiority and ending.

Background and Influences

He was among the founders of a studio formed by fans who turned professional, and he designed characters for its earliest features before this project. His line is thin, precise and rooted in mid century manga tradition rather than in the airbrushed style dominant when he began. He has continued designing characters for major animated features by other directors.

Style and Themes

Recurring subjects: adolescence as an unresolved wound, characters drawn to look tired rather than heroic, and design that communicates psychology through posture. His manga version leans further into the protagonist's self loathing than the animation does, and it stages several key events differently, producing a genuinely distinct reading of the same material.

Legacy and Influence

His designs are among the most recognisable in the medium and have been imitated for three decades. His manga sold in enormous numbers and functions for many readers as the primary version of the story rather than as a tie in, an unusual outcome for an adaptation running alongside its source.

Who Should Explore Their Work

For readers who want a familiar story told from a different angle by one of its own architects. Suited to anyone who has seen the animation and wants a version with more room for its characters' inner lives.
