Keanu Reeves

A time travelling slacker and the man who bends a simulation, played with the same total sincerity: Keanu Reeves never winks.

Reeves plays the guitarist in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and the hacker in The Matrix. Both roles work because he refuses irony: the comedy is played straight, and the science fiction is played with a bewilderment that lets the audience learn the rules alongside him.

Background and Influences

He grew up in Toronto and came up through Canadian theatre and independent film. His action work is defined by extensive physical preparation, and his willingness to train for months has changed industry expectations for the form. He is also a musician and has written comics, and he is notably indifferent to conventional star management.

Style and Themes

Recurring subjects: the chosen one who does not want the job, grief carried without discussion, and characters who are better at moving than at speaking. He plays stillness well, and he uses a limited emotional range with unusual precision rather than attempting to widen it, which is why his performances age better than their reviews.

Legacy and Influence

His simulation film reshaped action cinema and popular vocabulary, and his later hitman franchise is credited with restoring long take fight choreography to Western filmmaking. He has become an unusual kind of public figure, admired as much for reported personal conduct as for the roles.

Who Should Explore Their Work

For viewers who want action performed rather than edited. Suited to anyone approaching the science fiction work for the first time, and to those who enjoy comedies played entirely without cynicism.
