Fourth Wing: Amazon Bets Big on BookTok After The Wheel of Time

The Official Word

On May 11, 2026, during their Upfronts presentation in New York, Prime Video officially gave the green light to Fourth Wing. The adaptation of Rebecca Yarros's hit novels is set to reach over 240 countries.

Meredith Averill (The Haunting of Hill House, Locke & Key, Wednesday Season 2) is on board as writer and showrunner. Lisa Joy, co-creator of Westworld and executive producer of Fallout, will direct the pilot.

Michael B. Jordan, Jonathan Nolan, Liz Pelletier, and Yarros herself are among the executive producers. There’s no official cast yet, and no release date, even though the rights were snapped up back in October 2023.

The Void Amazon Needs to Fill

May 2025: Amazon cancels The Wheel of Time after three seasons. Even though Season 3 saw the best critical reception of the entire series, it wasn't enough to save it.

Meanwhile, The Rings of Power saw its Season 2 viewership drop by about 60% compared to the first. For a show with a budget hovering around $60 million per episode, that’s a brutal math problem.

Prime Video is down to its last major fantasy heavy hitter, and it’s looking shaky. Amazon needed a new horse in the rac, and they needed it fast.

Why Fourth Wing, and Why Now?

The numbers don't lie. The The Empyrean series has sold over 12 million copies in less than two years. The third volume, Onyx Storm, moved 2.7 million copies in its first week back in January 2025, the fastest-selling adult novel in two decades, according to the New York Times.

On TikTok, the #FourthWing and #RebeccaYarros hashtags have racked up over a billion views. With three books out and two more on the way, the fanbase is as mobilized as anything we’ve seen since the height of Harry Potter back in 2007.

Amazon’s choice isn't a mystery. Adapting a BookTok phenomenon of this scale is essentially buying a built-in audience before the cameras even start rolling. The viewers are already there, identified, and ready to be converted into ROI.

Amazon knows the recipe works. The Summer I Turned Pretty and Maxton Hall, their other BookTok adaptations, have already proven that this strategy pays off.

The Wheel of Time targeted a demanding, older readership that wasn't exactly forgiving of creative liberties. Fourth Wing is aiming for a younger, female-skewing audience that is already invested. One was a prestige gamble; the other is a calculated play for returns.

The Showrunner Shuffle

The project's recent history is worth a look.

In 2024, Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad, Anne with an E) wrote the pilot. Yarros read it and said she "couldn't be happier" with the result.

Walley-Beckett left the production in the summer of 2024, and Meredith Averill took over in September 2025, leading to a rewrite of the pilot.

Yarros now says she has "complete trust" in the new team. Same enthusiasm, different team, same promotional playbook. Something to keep in mind before the next wave of press releases hits.

Lisa Joy: The Wild Card

Having Lisa Joy direct the pilot is both reassuring and a little concerning.

Westworld, which she co-created, started as a critical darling before collapsing under the weight of its own narrative complexity. However, Fallout, which she produced, was hailed as a rare, successful adaptation. It’s a mixed bag.

A pilot dictates a show’s tone, pacing, and visual identity. Handing that responsibility to a director capable of both brilliance and incomprehensibility is a bold, calculated risk.

Three Things to Watch

The real test will come in the next few months. Keep an eye on these three markers:

  • The casting of Xaden Riorson: Yarros has confirmed a person of color will play this pivotal role. The BookTok community will be scrutinizing this choice with a magnifying glass.
  • The start of filming: Two and a half years after acquiring the rights, there’s still no start date. Any further delays will only add to the pressure.
  • The tone of the first teaser: Is it romance-first or fantasy-first? The answer will tell us more about Amazon’s true intentions than any press release ever could.

Amazon has the money. Amazon has the brand. Amazon also has a growing graveyard of cancelled projects. We’ll see what happens when that first teaser drops.
