A school story with a trapdoor underneath

Owls at breakfast, moving staircases, candles floating over long tables: the furniture of fantasy rarely arrives with this much snap. Published in 1997, Harry Potter turns the old boarding-school novel into something stranger and far more mischievous.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling writes in a register that stays clear enough for younger readers while slipping in dry comedy, menace, and a sharp sense of social hierarchy. What sets the book apart is not just magic, but the way rules, houses, classes, and petty humiliations make the wizarding world feel recognizably human.

The Story

Harry Potter grows up neglected and ordinary, then learns that he belongs to a hidden magical world and has been invited to study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Once there, lessons, friendships, and rivalries quickly tangle with a deeper mystery linked to his past and to a threat that never feels entirely gone.

This is the 1997 beginning of a larger saga, and you can feel the first stones being laid without the novel turning into homework for later books. We would argue that its real trick is tonal balance: wonder for younger readers, unease for everyone else.

Who Should Read This

This fantasy novel suits readers who like their magic systems filtered through school timetables, sports obsessions, and the small cruelties of childhood. It works perfectly as an entry point for younger fantasy readers, but adults can still enjoy how briskly it moves and how carefully it plants character tensions. Expect some bullying, some peril, and a steady darkening around the edges.

Short Review of Harry Potter

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling is a captivating series that blends magic, adventure, and friendship into an unforgettable story. It follows the journey of a young boy, Harry, who discovers he is a wizard and attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Throughout the series, Harry faces challenges, uncovers mysteries, and battles the dark wizard Voldemort.

What makes the story special is its strong themes of courage, loyalty, and the power of love. average, mean-spirited and let's be real, been done a hundred times before

an extremely average book that's propped up by nostalgia and a massive amount of corporate merch money. it's mean-spirited to the core, empty of any message except for 'keep things as they are, even if that means things keep sucking'. the writing is droll and unimaginative and again, mean-spirited. there are constant digs at characters looks, appearance, looks, and appearances. the world-building is only there to serve harry's wonder at this new world, and to make 'you' want to be there. you don't want to be there. it's an extremely unequal and hateful world.

also, JK Rowling is using the money she makes from the franchise to fund trans hate, and quite frankly, continuing to engage with this universe (reading the books, watching the movies/tv shows, etc) knowing that *is* a political statement. and i judge you personally.

read something else. i recommend Mio My Mio by Astrid Lindgren.

A Dark fantasy for the kids

I could still remember I was 8 my mom had just returned from travel and got me a lot of CD tapes. And this novel was among those tapes. Then a friend stole it. But the movie is to die for it most talks about a boy with some kind of extremely rare magic. Not to spoil this mangneficent movie give it a try

Reminds me of Merlin ... never gets boring

I've been watching this show for a while now and I have to say, it really reminds me of Merlin. The dynamic between the characters is great and the story keeps you hooked.

Even after several episodes, it still doesn't get boring. I'm already looking forward to the next season!

A very good author

I haven't read this one, but only Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, since I really liked the movie (more than the book). But I admit that J.K Rowling took a big gamble by writing these magic stories that were later turned into movies, it took her years to find a publisher and, with perseverance she succeeded. These novels are the best-selling works in the entire world and translated into thousands of languages. It's a masterpiece 👌

A bit basic, but it's okay

Harry Potter's success is undeserved in my opinion: I've never felt the intensity that I've experienced reading other fantasy sagas.
Despite that, it's still an enjoyable read, and the ending gains some maturity.

A generationally-impactful light fantasy series

While much can be said of Rowling's personal views, this series' enduring impact on my generation can't be overstated. Even if the writing is a bit lackluster, this is a series that can still be enjoyed by adults and children alike. The books' central focus on a three-person friendship (Ron, Hermione, and Harry) is its biggest strength, followed closely by its imaginative world-building.

With an upcoming, big-budget TV adaptation coming, it's about to be thrust into the spotlight yet again.

The Book of My Childhood

I was 8 years old when I first dove into these novels. Once I started, there was no turning back. This magical world had me utterly spellbound. To give you an idea, I even begged my parents to sign me up for magic classes, naively believing I'd learn real magic 🫣
