Fans are torn between excitement and anxiety, and honestly, that feels about right. The return of X-Files in a brand-new form is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched bets in TV right now. For this reboot, Hulu is going all in on a complete reimagining, helmed by a filmmaker whose track record is impossible to argue with.
Ryan Coogler Reopens the Files
It's hard to think of a better person to take on something this iconic than Ryan Coogler. From Fruitvale Station to Creed to Black Panther, he's consistently shown a rare ability to honor what came before while pushing things forward.
His latest, Sinners, a multi-Oscar-winning juggernaut, has cemented his place among the handful of filmmakers who seem to turn everything they touch into gold.
But behind this reinvention of a beloved '90s TV institution, there's also something more personal at play.
X-Files is something I share with my mom. So this is a project that means a lot to me personally. I want to do right by her, and by the fans.
A personal project, then. And those are often the riskiest kind.
A Powerhouse Team Behind the Camera
Joining Coogler is Jennifer Yale, who will serve as showrunner. It's a smart pick: with credits including Legion, Outlander, and The Neighbors, she knows her way around complex narratives and unsettling atmospheres.
Behind the lens, Coogler is bringing back his trusted cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw, who was responsible for the striking visual identity of Sinners.
And one detail that's far from minor: Chris Carter himself, the original creator of the show, is staying involved as an executive producer.
New Generation, New Agents
On the casting front, the intention is clear: this isn't about recasting Mulder and Scully (and honestly, who could ever accept different faces than David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson?) but about introducing entirely new characters.
The lead roles go to:
- Himesh Patel
- Danielle Deadwyler
Patel broke out in Danny Boyle's Yesterday, playing a musician who wakes up in a world where the Beatles never existed. He's since appeared in Christopher Nolan's Tenet and Adam McKay's Don't Look Up. This summer, he'll be playing Dr. Watson in Enola Holmes 3.
Deadwyler, meanwhile, has made a serious impression in Watchmen, the biopic Till, the thriller Carry-On, and the 2024 adaptation of The Piano.
And this won't be the first time the two share a screen: they previously starred together in the miniseries Station Eleven.
A Mythology to Rebuild From the Ground Up
This isn't the first time the show has tried to make a comeback. After wrapping in 2001, X-Files already attempted a revival in 2016 and 2018 with Anderson and Duchovny back in the fold.
But this time, the bet is different: start fresh, without leaning on the iconic duo.
The premise stays true to the DNA of the original: two brilliant but contrasting FBI agents are assigned to a forgotten division dedicated to unexplained phenomena.
One subtle but meaningful shift: where Scully was there to keep Mulder in check, the dynamic here seems more balanced, almost symmetrical between the two leads.
Reasons to Believe
- The Coogler factor: he has a proven track record of balancing blockbuster scale with genuine emotional depth
- A real reinvention: no copy-paste job, but a brand-new mythology to explore
- Solid casting: Patel and Deadwyler bring freshness and real credibility to the table
- Strong visual identity: with Arkapaw on cinematography, the look of the show could be something special
What the Skeptics Are Worried About
- No Mulder and Scully: that's a tough sell for longtime fans
- The weight of the legacy: reinventing without betraying is a genuinely difficult tightrope to walk
- Sky-high expectations: Coogler comes in with a near-untouchable reputation
- The streaming formula risk: Hulu will need to give the show room to breathe
What About the Originals?
The question on everyone's mind: could the fan-favorite originals make an appearance?
Gillian Anderson left the door wide open after reading the script.
Keep an open mind and give it a chance because it's going to be really cool.
After a public statement like that, a cameo is definitely not off the table. Duchovny, for his part, hasn't officially weighed in yet.
No release date has been announced, but Hulu has officially greenlit production and the pilot is now moving forward. For those who believe the truth is out there, it looks like a little more patience is required.
