More of a popcorn flick, but still enjoyable
Overall, I'm glad I watched this and enjoyed the 90 minutes, but it's a rather forgettable entry into this genre that I'll likely not watch again. It's...fine.
Disclosure Day (2026 movie) Trailer
Few directors have shaped how cinema imagines extraterrestrial contact as durably as Steven Spielberg. With Disclosure Day, he returns to that territory for the first time in decades, this time with a story rooted not in wonder alone but in institutional cover-up, psychic awakening, and the fragile possibility of global de-escalation.
Emily Blunt anchors the film as a Kansas City television meteorologist whose on-air breakdown, speaking an alien language she has never learned, sets the plot in motion. Critics have largely called it the finest work of her career. The score comes from John Williams, who reportedly wrote the music to sit beneath the film rather than lead it, a deliberate restraint that marks a shift from his more symphonic Spielberg collaborations.
When a cybersecurity specialist steals classified files from a secret government arm that has been concealing decades of human-alien contact, he becomes a federal fugitive. Across the country, a meteorologist begins manifesting unexplained psychic abilities after a strange encounter with a cardinal. Their paths converge as the world edges toward war.
The film is an original story conceived by Spielberg, not an adaptation, and stands as a standalone work.
Disclosure Day runs 145 minutes and received a wide theatrical release, including IMAX and 70 mm formats. The ensemble cast also includes Colin Firth, Josh O'Connor, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. The film carries thriller-level tension and some action sequences, making it a comfortable choice for most adult audiences.
