Project Hail Mary
Project Hail Mary (2026 movie) Trailer
Brains before bravado
Project Hail Mary is the kind of large-scale science fiction film that still believes problem-solving can be suspenseful. It opens with a man waking up alone on a spacecraft, memory in pieces, then builds its tension through scientific deduction, creeping isolation, and the unnerving realization that first contact may be less about conquest than translation.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct, with Ryan Gosling leading a cast that also includes Sandra Hüller. The film adapts Andy Weir's novel through a script by Drew Goddard, and that pedigree shows in the blend of hard-science puzzles, clean humor, and crowd-pleasing momentum.
Viewing Guide
It is a standalone blockbuster, built for viewers who like their space movies with math, wit, and a surprising amount of warmth.
One production choice deserves real attention: the film uses practical work for Rocky, the alien Grace meets, with puppetry and visual effects sharing the load rather than burying the character under digital gloss. We are glad it does, because that tactile choice gives the film a pulse that many expensive space spectacles never find.

Lives up to the hype
It's a little hokey at times, but if you're okay with that, this is a smartly-written film that faithfully adapts the novel.
