When Tomorrow Became Yesterday: A Dive Into "Back to the Future Part II"

In 1989, moviegoers were handed a vision of 2015 through neon-tinted glasses. It was a world of hoverboards, self-lacing shoes, and instant pizza,a bold leap into the future that now feels as retro as cassette tapes. Back to the Future Part II didn't just offer fantastical gadgets; it provided audiences with a whimsical yet cautionary glimpse at what could be.

The Pitch

The film picks up right where its predecessor left off. Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, must travel forward in time with his eccentric mentor, Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), to avert a looming family crisis. But meddling with time is tricky business. An altered timeline morphs Hill Valley into a dystopian wasteland ruled by an unchecked Biff Tannen. The stakes? Restoring balance before it's too late.

Direction and Visual Universe

Robert Zemeckis, the director who brought us onto this wild ride initially, doesn't disappoint with his sequel. He cranks up the creativity and humor while maintaining narrative precision. The visual design, replete with 80s-infused futurism, makes it unforgettable. Alan Silvestri's score ties everything together seamlessly, punctuating each twist and turn with rhythmic urgency. The ensemble cast delivers performances that are both dynamic and comfortably familiar.

Who Should Watch This

If you've ever wondered how filmmakers in the 80s envisioned our present day,or if you simply enjoy clever sci-fi escapades, you owe it to yourself to watch this fantastical continuation of Marty and Doc's extraordinary journey. With a runtime that keeps you engaged without overstaying its welcome, it's essential viewing for those invested in the series (Yes, start with the original!). Though generally family-friendly, younger viewers might need parental guidance during some intense scenes.

A Worthy Sequel

It's very rare that a sequel can live up to the original film. And considering Back to the Future is my favorite movie ever made, this had quite a lot to live up to. Fortunately, everyone was up to the task, and this sequel is one that is arguably even better than the original. It's certainly just as good.

The cliffhanger from the previous movie isn't just followed up on, but expanded into a larger and incredibly interesting storyline of its own. I'm still angry that 2015 looked practically nothing like what we saw here. The only hoverboards we got were those stupid segways without the handles...anyway! The story builds on top of the previous movie in a way I've never seen done before or since, and the level of foreshadowing used for the final movie is done masterfully. The two movies were being made at the same time, which explains a lot about how they were able to fit them together so well.

This is the only entry in the trilogy that takes place in the past, "present," and "future" all at once. Each setting (back in the 50s, the alternative 1985, and 2015) is amazing! I already praised the far better than real life 2015, but the "nightmare" 1985 is really cool too. It's all so sleazy, perfectly reflecting who changed the timeline for the worse. And going back to the 50s really does just feel like we stepped right back into the first movie. The effort kept into keeping the continuity consistent is both impressive and highly appreciated.

If you liked Back to the Future, well first off you have excellent taste. But second, if you haven't seen the sequel, why haven't you?! Do yourself a favor and go watch the whole trilogy right now!
