Eiichiro Oda has published a chapter almost every week since July 1997. The manga passed 500 million copies in print, which no other comic has done, and it is still running toward an ending its author has described since the beginning as already written.

A pirate story planned to the end before it started

Oda pitched the series at 22 with the ending already decided. He has said the final scene has not changed since 1997, and he told the anime's producers what it was so they would stop asking.

The premise is simple enough to fit on a poster: a boy who cannot swim wants to be king of the pirates. Every arc adds a crew member with a reason for leaving home, and the pattern has held for a quarter of a century.

The drawing is dense to the point of difficulty. Oda fills the page edge to edge, hides jokes in crowd scenes and works, by his own account, more than eighteen hours a day.

The anime that never stops and the pacing problem it created

Toei began adapting in 1999 and has produced more than 1100 episodes. For long stretches it moved slower than the manga, stretching a few pages across a full episode.

The studio changed method in 2023, moving to seasonal blocks with gaps, which is what viewers had asked for since the 2000s.

A separate remake, produced by a different studio and beginning again from the first chapter, started in 2025 for the audience that will not begin an anime with a thousand episodes behind it.

Netflix does what nobody expected a live adaptation to do

Live-action versions of manga have a long record of failure. Netflix released its One Piece in 2023 with Oda involved in casting and scripts, and with the authority to reject material.

He used it. Episodes were rewritten and reshot at his request, and the result is the rare adaptation of this kind that its source audience accepted.

It reached the top of the platform's charts in more than eighty countries and was renewed within two weeks. Netflix had cancelled its previous manga adaptation after one season.

Why the ending matters more than usual

Most long series end because the author is tired or the sales fall. This one is heading for a conclusion designed before the first page, in a market where that is close to unheard of.

The manga has outsold every competitor in Japan for most of two decades, and its single volumes still print in the millions.

Oda said in 2024 that the ending would arrive within a few years. Readers who started in 1997 will have waited more than thirty, and the entire industry is watching whether a promise made at 22 can survive being kept at 50.
