The Expanse
A Cosmic Odyssey of Power and Paranoia
In this future, the lights flickering outside your spaceship window are not stars, but scattered debris from decimated planets. This is the universe of James S.A. Corey, a place where every decision could ignite an interstellar war or reveal a conspiracy that shifts the balance of power.
The Story
In this expansive narrative, we follow Jim Holden, an officer aboard the ice hauler Canterbury. His life takes a dramatic turn when their ship stumbles upon an abandoned vessel, sparking conflicts that ripple through the solar system. The stakes are high as political factions, the Earth-based United Nations, the independent Mars, and the resource-strapped Belt, vie for control. Betrayals lurk around every corner in this claustrophobic cosmos.
What Makes This Book Unique
This isn't just another space opera; it's a sociopolitical thriller cloaked in the guise of science fiction. Corey's collaboration blends hard science with gritty noir, reminiscent of Philip K. Dick's work yet expanded to galaxies beyond our reach. The narrative is unafraid to delve into themes of power and humanity's primal instincts for survival, making even vast empty spaces feel intimately dangerous.
Who Should Read This
If your bookshelf groans under tales of intricate politics and moral ambiguity, think Dune meets Ridley Scott’s cinematic style, this series should be next on your list. Although it demands attention with its complex web of alliances and betrayals, the reward is a richly woven tapestry you can lose yourself in for days on end.

A series so compelling I've read it six times
Over the course of the nine books, it's hard not to become attached to the crew of the Rocinante as you come to know their personalities, proclivities, and their flaws. Even when technological innovation and scientific discoveries cause humanity to move at a much faster pace than is good for them, it's these relationships at the core of the novels that hold everything together. And it's these people who, in the face of sometimes-overwhelming evidence to the contrary, manage to remind us that the pull toward human nature and greed isn’t as inexorable as it seems.
There's no series I've recommended more to family and friends, and no series that has been as well received. To date, close to 20 people have read all nine books because of my recommendation, and I think that alone is strong enough evidence to see why this is a 10/10 series. I tell anyone who will listen that The Expanse is the best series I've ever read, and there's not a particularly close second.
