The Tactical Renaissance of "Fire Emblem: Awakening"

In a move that felt both risky and revitalizing, Intelligent Systems, the developer behind Fire Emblem: Awakening, managed to breathe new life into a series previously wavering on the brink. Released in 2012, this game wasn't just another installment; it was the lifeline that pulled the franchise back from obscurity and into the limelight,an achievement so impactful it's still discussed globally.

The Experience

Set in a fantastical realm torn by war and political intrigue, players assume command of a customizable tactician aiding Prince Chrom of Ylisse. With its signature grid-based combat system and permadeath feature, each move is a delicate dance of strategy and foresight. The game's allure lies in its intricate relationships among characters, which not only affect story progress but also combat effectiveness. This interplay creates an addictively dynamic gameplay loop.

What Sets It Apart

The vibrant art direction blends anime aesthetics with medieval motifs, crafting a visual narrative as engaging as its plot. Music composed by Yuka Tsujiyoko complements this with sweeping orchestral tracks that heighten every moment's intensity. My First Fire Emblem

Fire Emblem: Awakening was my first exposure to the Fire Emblem franchise, as I know it was for many others. And frankly, I think that it’s the perfect introduction. You can play it on an easier difficulty for your first playthrough, then turn on things like permadeath if you want a bit more of a challenge.

The story of Awakening is admittedly a bit long. They probably could’ve cut the part with Walhart down a bit? But overall, this is a rich world with an incredibly engaging plot and characters that continue to stick with me as some of my favorites Nintendo has ever given us.

There’s a lot of replay value, too! There’s the higher difficulty, as I mentioned, but you’re also likely to miss certain units on your first playthrough. Experimenting with which ones to couple together is also fun, and may or may not be half the reason I play Fire Emblem games at this point. What can I say, I like pushing the little characters together and going “Now kiss!”

The gameplay is strategy-based, but it’s pretty easy to pick up on. I’m usually not great at strategy, so if I managed to beat this when I was younger, I’m sure most people can figure it out.

Also, killer soundtrack. The music ranges from calm and soothing to epic and courageous, preparing you for the wars ahead and the softer moments between battles.

If you’ve got a 3DS, do yourself a favor and play it. It’s one of the best games in the system’s library, and that’s saying something.
