Crimson Desert: A New Dawn in Open-World Storytelling

Imagine sweeping through the snow-dusted plains of a medieval fantasy realm. Crimson Desert draws you in with a magnetic pull, offering a rich tapestry of conflict and camaraderie. Developed by Pearl Abyss, this game is not just about epic battles, but also the intimate stories woven between them.

The Experience

This is no ordinary open-world RPG. At its core, Crimson Desert is about Pywel,a land fraught with bloodshed and betrayal. You step into the boots of mercenary captain Macduff, embarking on a deeply personal journey against the backdrop of larger political turmoil. Dynamic combat mechanics blend seamlessly with exploration, forging alliances or enemies as you navigate the turmoil of this divided world.

What Sets It Apart

The art direction in Crimson Desert is a sight to behold, merging photorealistic environments with painterly attention to detail. The music score echoes this grandeur, both haunting and invigorating, amplifying each narrative twist. Interestingly, Pearl Abyss has opted for an evolving narrative style that challenges traditional storytelling norms within the genre. This marks an ambitious leap from their previous title, Black Desert Online, pushing boundaries in both scale and emotional depth.

Who Should Play This

If you're drawn to epic narratives laced with strategic gameplay and moral complexity, this is your arena. Averaging around 30-40 hours for the main storyline, it demands focus yet rewards exploration generously. Available on both PC and console platforms, it's poised for those who appreciate intricate world-building without needing prior series familiarity.

Solo

Needs work, and a sale, but don't write it off just yet

Crimson Desert is wildly ambitious, and if you liked Black Desert, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to enjoy here too. It throws a ton of systems at you, but a lot of them feel a bit shallow once the novelty wears off. The generic, forgettable main character doesn’t help, and the nearly eight-hour “tutorial” is a brutal ask. That said, the devs have already improved several gameplay elements, so I would not write it off completely. Still, at full price? That is a much harder recommendation. Still, unless you are absolutely PUMPED to play another open world fantasy game, this feels like a wait-for-a-sale game.
