Neon Dreams and Digital Nightmares: Cyberpunk 2077's Allure
When CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher series, announced "Cyberpunk 2077," expectations were sky-high. Launched amidst an unprecedented hype storm in December 2020, it quickly became a talking point not just for its ambitious scope but also for its turbulent technical journey. Today, it stands as a testament to both the heights and hurdles of modern game development.
The Experience
Set in the sprawling, gritty Neo-dystopia of Night City, players navigate through this digital metropolis as V, a mercenary with a customizable backstory and skillset. A first-person RPG brimming with quests, hacking mechanics, and high-octane combat forms the core of your experience. Every street corner teems with life (and danger), making exploration as thrilling as it is perilous.
What Sets It Apart
"Cyberpunk 2077" shines in its art direction, think neon lights illuminating rain-soaked streets, and an evocative soundtrack that pulsates alongside your adventures. The narrative ambitions are huge; branching storylines promise different outcomes based on player choice, carving unique paths through this cybernetic labyrinth. While not flawless at launch, subsequent updates have refined its mechanics and stabilized its ambitious open world.
Who Should Play This
If you're a fan of open-world RPGs with rich storytelling and complex character customization, this cyber-epic is calling your name. Available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game demands patience and an appetite for discovery. While familiarity with CD Projekt Red’s previous titles adds context to their developmental ethos, no prerequisite knowledge is required to immerse yourself in V's vivid journey. Average playtime clocks around 20-40 hours depending on your affinity for side quests.

Possibly the greatest comeback story in video game history
You play as V, a mercenary with one of three unique origin stories. Much of the game takes place inside the hedonistic neon playground known as Night City, and your roleplaying options within this urban den of debauchery are more or less limitless. As are your build and gameplay options.
Performances from Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba (in the expansion, Phantom Liberty) boost already-stellar performances from both voice actors who portray V. The game is filled with memorable characters and situations, many of which resolve in a way that reminds the player there are no truly happy endings in Night City.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the only game I've ever beaten and then immediately beaten again. It's also one of only a handful of games I've rated a 10/10 in the 12 years I've kept track of my video game ratings. It often goes on sale, and both the base game and expansion are worth a playthrough.
