Local 2-player mode is horribly buggy

Critically acclaimed game... which probably has potential, but I tried playing it locally with two players for a few hours, and it's a nightmare: repetitive bugs, the screen splits without warning, we're constantly disoriented, and each player can advance through the story without the other realizing it. Important dialogue stuck on one half of the screen while the other player is looking for their way or searching through trash cans.
