A Halifax suburb plays a town that keeps everyone who enters

Beaver Bank and the Sackville River, in the suburban community of Lower Sackville, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, stood in for the American town when the first season was shot there in May 2021. Forty episodes have followed, across four seasons. The residents cannot leave, and terrifying creatures come out of the surrounding forest at night.

YouTube Red announced John Griffin's series in June 2018, under a deal between the production company Midnight Radio and the Russo brothers' AGBO. It was transferred to Epix by April 2021, after YouTube moved into unscripted programming, so the first season went out under the Epix name and everything since has run on MGM+. Jack Bender directed the first four episodes and is an executive producer alongside Griffin, Jeff Pinkner and Harold Perrineau.

The Story

Harold Perrineau plays Boyd Stevens, the self-appointed sheriff and de facto mayor of that town. The Matthews family arrives and joins residents who search the town, and what lies beyond it, for secrets that might open a way out. Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, David Alpay and Elizabeth Saunders lead the rest of the cast.

The first season was well received: Rotten Tomatoes counted 96 percent of twenty-five notices as positive, averaging 6.8 out of 10, while Metacritic scored it 63 out of 100 from seven critics. Season four began on 19 April 2026, and MGM+ has ordered a fifth season, announced as the last, to be filmed in Halifax for a 2027 arrival.

The Ideal Audience

Common Sense Media sets it at sixteen and up and lists it as TV-MA: dead bodies in various states of decay, murder scenes splattered with viscera, frequent and copious swearing, a couple glimpsed having sex in a chair, adults who sometimes drink to excess. France has it on Paramount+ with a French dub, German-speaking viewers have had it since December 2022 on the same service, and a Castilian dub has been recorded at Deluxe since 2022.
