A novelist adapts his own book for a series filmed in Chicago

In January 2023, a film crew fenced off about half of Cricket Hill, at Montrose Harbor in Chicago, and built a fake house there that it planned to bury under fake snow to simulate a blizzard. The production still went by its working title, Durango 60623. It was the adaptation of a 2016 novel by Blake Crouch, who created the series and runs it as showrunner.

Filming took place mainly in Chicago, over six months from October 2022. Locations included Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago and two libraries of the University of Chicago. Joel Edgerton leads the cast opposite Jennifer Connelly, and Crouch wrote the first four episodes himself.

The Story

Jason Dessen teaches physics at a college in Chicago and lives with his wife Daniela and their son Charlie. As Jason walks home from a bar, a masked man abducts him at gunpoint and drugs him. Jason wakes up in a laboratory, Velocity Labs, where a psychiatrist named Amanda Lucas is delighted that he has returned, while his kidnapper, another version of Jason, settles into his life with Daniela and Charlie.

The way between worlds is a metal box: the traveller is sealed inside and injected with a chemical compound, a method discovered by the other Jason. Amanda Lucas, played by Alice Braga, enters the box with Jason and tries to help him find his way back home.

The Ideal Audience

Apple TV+ released the first two episodes on 8 May 2024 and the seven others weekly, and a second season of ten episodes began on 28 August 2026. Rotten Tomatoes counted 81 percent positive reviews among 59 critics for the first season.

Common Sense Media recommends it from age 14, citing a kidnapping at gunpoint, a character shot in the head, some profanity and a joint shared by two adults. The same guide names the relationship between Jason and his wife as a central topic, and we would recommend the series to viewers who want science fiction built around a marriage.

Somewhere between a good thriller and a great one

Having already read the source book several times, I was highly anticipating this series' first season. It didn't disappoint! Like the book, I find the characters to be a bit dull and lacking in personality, but the showrunners did an excellent job adapting this to the small screen. Season 2 releases later in 2026, and it promises to be as exciting as the first season (I hope!).
