A right hand man who is more frightening than his employer for the first half of a season: Toby Leonard Moore plays perfect service.

Moore plays the fixer and confidant of the antagonist in Daredevil, a character whose entire personality is competence in someone else's interest. The performance works because he plays genuine affection for his employer rather than fear, which makes the relationship the most human thing in the series' criminal half.

Background and Influences

He is an Australian actor who trained at his country's national drama school and worked in theatre before American television. He has since played a prosecutor in a long running financial crime drama, another role built on ambition inside an institution that will not reward it.

Style and Themes

Recurring subjects: service, men defined by their proximity to power, and loyalty that is sincere and therefore tragic. He plays with immaculate control and uses stillness deliberately, and he is unusually good at conveying an entire history between two people through the way a character addresses someone.

Legacy and Influence

His superhero role is frequently cited as a supporting performance that made an antagonist credible by giving him someone to be human with. His financial crime drama ran for several seasons and gave him a considerably larger canvas for the same register.

Who Should Explore Their Work

For viewers who appreciate the second in command who makes the villain work. Not suitable for younger audiences. Suited to anyone approaching the street level adaptation, and to those who should follow it with the financial crime drama afterwards.
