Cyberpunk adapted twice, from a manga and from a novel, with the body kept as the subject: Laeta Kalogridis works in transferred flesh.

Kalogridis writes and produces across film and television. She co-wrote Alita : Battle Angel, adapting a manga about a cyborg rebuilt from a discarded core, and created Altered Carbon, a series set in a future where consciousness is stored on a disc and bodies are interchangeable equipment.

Background and Influences

She has worked extensively as a screenwriter and producer on large genre productions, and she is a longstanding advocate for adapting source material that studios consider difficult. Noir detective fiction supplies the structure of her science fiction work, and questions about embodiment and identity supply its subject.

Style and Themes

Recurring subjects: embodiment, women whose physical form is contested by others, and economies where the wealthy escape mortality while everyone else does not. Her plots are constructed as investigations, so exposition arrives as evidence. She keeps class inequality explicit rather than implied.

Legacy and Influence

Her cyberpunk series was one of the most expensive science fiction productions attempted for streaming at the time and helped establish that the format could carry hard genre material at scale. Her manga adaptation is notable for its long development and for treating its source with unusual fidelity in both design and structure.

Who Should Explore Their Work

For viewers who want cyberpunk with a detective plot and real physical stakes. Suited to readers of the source material in both cases, and to anyone interested in stories where identity is separable from the body.
