A turn based empire that resolves into a battle of thousands: Creative Assembly joined two genres and refused to pick one.

The British studio makes strategy games with two distinct layers. Total War: Warhammer III alternates between a turn based campaign map, where economies and diplomacy are managed, and real time battles in which the armies assembled on that map fight at full scale, with morale and terrain deciding as much as numbers.

Background and Influences

The studio's earlier work covered historical periods, and the research habits from that era survive in how formations, weapon reach and unit fatigue are modelled. Its later collaboration with a tabletop wargaming setting was a natural fit: a fiction already built around army lists, factions and rules translated directly into its structure.

Style and Themes

Recurring subjects: attrition, empires overextending themselves, and battles decided by nerve rather than by arithmetic. Units break and flee rather than fighting to the last, so a charge into an exposed flank can end an engagement in seconds. Faction design is strongly asymmetric, with each army demanding a different campaign approach rather than a reskinned one.

Legacy and Influence

The studio effectively created the hybrid it works in, and no competitor has sustained the combination at the same scale. Its adaptation of a fantasy wargame introduced that setting to a far larger audience than the tabletop had reached, and the resulting trilogy is among the most extensive strategy projects ever attempted.

Who Should Explore Their Work

For players who want to command both an empire and its battle lines. Suited to anyone who has painted miniatures, and to strategy players who find pure economic management too abstract. Expect a demanding interface and campaigns measured in dozens of hours.
