Tom Holland has a bit of a reputation for being a loose cannon when it comes to spoilers. This time, he accidentally dropped the most intriguing name associated with Brand New Day.
It wasn't a new cast member. It wasn't a villain. It was a screenwriter.
During an appearance on Amy Poehler’s podcast, Holland was discussing a scene rewrite on set and let a first name slip: Justin. Fans immediately put the pieces together.
That "Justin" is Justin Kuritzkes. The mastermind behind the script for Challengers.
Marvel Didn't Want You to Know
The official credits list two names: Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The duo behind the previous three Spider-Man films.
Kuritzkes was nowhere to be found on the official paperwork until Holland spilled the beans in that interview.
Since then, it has been confirmed: Kuritzkes is officially receiving a writing credit on the film, working alongside the original duo.
Who Is This Guy, and Why Does It Matter?
Kuritzkes has two major films under his belt: Challengers and Queer, both directed by Luca Guadagnino and both released in 2024.
Challengers is a tense love triangle told through the lens of a high-stakes tennis match. It is defined by sharp dialogue and heavy, lingering silences.
In other words, it is the polar opposite of a $200 million blockbuster.
And here is the kicker: Zendaya starred in Challengers. She knows Kuritzkes’ writing style inside and out.
Routine Rewrite or Red Flag?
Marvel rewrites are standard operating procedure. Bringing in a fresh writer to polish a script happens on almost every studio production.
However, the journey of Brand New Day has been more turbulent than most.
The delay caused by Christopher Nolan’s latest project gave the team a six-month window of breathing room, which they used to completely restructure the film.
The project was reportedly caught between a cosmic, multiverse-heavy plot and a more grounded, street-level story. The rewrites ultimately chose the latter.
Why This Choice Actually Makes Sense
A street-level, intimate story focused on Peter and MJ is exactly the kind of playground where Kuritzkes thrives.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton has been promising a shift in tone since January, something distinct from the Jon Watts era.
Bringing in the writer of Challengers to sharpen the chemistry and dialogue between Peter and MJ sends a very clear message about the direction they are taking.
What the New Trailer Reveals
The second trailer, released on June 17, shows a darker, more burdened Peter. He is dealing with a transformation that is spiraling out of his control, complete with organic web-shooters.
With Hulk and The Punisher making appearances, the tone feels significantly more mature than anything we saw in the Watts trilogy.
The real test will be whether that promise holds up for the full two-hour runtime, rather than just two minutes of expertly cut footage.

The Real Gamble
Marvel has two ways of handling indie-darling writers: they either let them bring their unique voice to the table, or they polish that voice until it is unrecognizable.
The studio has done both in the past.
The question isn't whether Brand New Day will be a spectacle, the trailer's record-breaking numbers have already answered that.
The real question is whether it will actually have something to say. We will find out at the end of July.
