A Howl in the Night: Werewolf by Night Unleashed

As the shadows lengthen and the moon rises high, "Werewolf by Night" prowls onto the scene with a ferocious charm. This film emerges from a rich lineage of horror cinema, yet it manages to carve out its own niche in the genre. Its release stirred curiosity and excitement among audiences familiar with its supernatural lore.

The Pitch

In "Werewolf by Night," we follow Jack Russell, a reluctant hero burdened with an ancient curse. By day, he's just trying to live his life; by night, he becomes something else entirely. His journey leads him into a web of secret societies and arcane rituals as he battles both external foes and his inner demons. Tension builds as Jack races against time to break free from this nocturnal nightmare.

Direction and Visual Universe

Michael Giacchino, a name more commonly associated with Oscar-winning scores, takes the helm as director here, bringing his unique flair for dramatic tension and evocative imagery. The art direction borrows from classic horror films but spices things up with vibrant modern techniques. The film’s visual landscape is rich with ominous forests, eerie mansions, and claustrophobic urban labyrinths that pulse with suspense. The cast includes stellar performances that elevate the tale of terror.

Who Should Watch This

This film caters to fans of horror who relish a mix of mystery and folklore. With a runtime that respects attention spans while delivering thrills aplenty, it’s perfect for those looking for an intense yet concise viewing experience. Though not tied to any franchise saga, its dark themes might be intense for younger viewers or those sensitive to horror elements.

Unique for the MCU

This is not a standard MCU affair, even by Disney+ exclusive standards. It leans more into horror, which is of course the big one. But it's also got other differences. It's mostly self-contained, and not only is it in black and white, it was filmed TO BE in black and white.

It's fairly short, an easy one to just sit down and watch, but it makes use of its run time well! The exposition's delivered without dragging on, Elsa and Jack are played excellently by their respective actors, and we get a great-looking Man-Thing and Werewolf on the effects side of things. Ted looks like he hopped straight out of the comics, it's great. And Jack as a wolf-man looks cool; it's closer to a Lon Chaney Jr than an American Werewolf in London. It's not on screen for long, but I enjoyed every second it was. They even used some moments in shadow to their advantage, since sometimes what we can imagine is a lot scarier than what they can put to screen.

The gore in this is pretty low-key. It's about what I'd expect from something technically within the MCU. It's still got plenty of the universe's hallmarks, like jokes, but the humor was on the drier side. If you're looking for something kinda spooky, but still Marvel, to watch, throw it on! I had a great time watching it.
