Into the Shadows of a Forgotten World

Imagine the soft rustle of leaves underfoot and the distant call of a raven echoing in the twilight. That's where Anthony Ryan guides us with his 2013 epic fantasy debut. This journey into darkness is not just about survival; it's about power, belief, and an unyielding quest for truth.

The Story

Vaelin Al Sorna is more than a warrior; he's a force of nature shaped by the harsh corridors of training at the Sixth Order. In a world where religion dictates destiny, Vaelin's loyalty is both his weapon and his chain. As shadows loom larger, secrets unravel that could shatter empires. The stakes? Nothing less than the soul of a kingdom, wrapped in layers of mystery and ambition.

What Makes This Book Unique

Raven's Shadow stands tall in its genre with its intricate blend of dark fantasy and historical elements. Ryan's prose weaves a tapestry where every character breathes with purpose and every twist surprises as much as it satisfies. Unlike many epic fantasies, this one takes its time to explore moral ambiguity in the vein of George R.R. Martin’s works but retains a unique voice and rhythm all its own.

Who Should Read This

If you relish complex narratives that demand your focus and richly developed worlds that challenge your perceptions, this book has a place on your shelf. Newcomers to epic fantasy should brace themselves for its density, while seasoned readers will appreciate its nuanced take on power and destiny. Be prepared for themes that are as dark as they are enlightening.

Entertaining Read

I was torn between giving it 3 or 4 stars... In the end, I settled on 3 stars for this saga recommended by an ex-colleague (Wouter, if you're reading this đź‘‹). The book is highly entertaining, and it's enjoyable to watch both the story and the main character develop. However, a few things did bug me: the ending didn't live up to expectations, and after a few years, I can't recall a single character's name from the book. Unlike Frodo, Jon Snow, Rand Al'Thor, Matrim Cauthon...
