Dropkick on my devil!
A demon comedy financed by its fans and by a town in Hokkaido
In September 2020, a crowdfunding campaign on the Motion Gallery website asked fans for 20 million yen to produce a third season, and passed that goal in 33 hours. The first season, directed by Hikaru Sato at the studio Nomad, had aired on BS Fuji in 2018, and a second season was ordered after the first sold more than 2,000 Blu-ray and DVD copies. The third season, subtitled X, aired from July to September 2022.
The opening song of the first season is sung by seven voice actresses, each in character, among them Aina Suzuki as Jashin and Nichika Ōmori as Yurine. Makoto Koga designed the characters and served as chief animation director. The source is a manga written and drawn by Yukiwo since April 2012 for Comic Meteor, a web magazine published by Flex Comix.
The Story
Yurine Hanazono, a college student and aspiring witch, has summoned Jashin, a lamia from Hell who cannot go back on her own. Jashin spends each day trying to kill Yurine and failing. Yurine answers with brutal, bloody punishments, which Jashin survives thanks to her regenerative powers.
Around them gather Medusa, a gorgon who wears a paper bag on her head outdoors so that she does not turn people to stone, and Pekola, an angel who has lost her halo and often goes hungry for lack of money.
The Ideal Audience
The city of Furano, in Hokkaido, collected donations through Japan's hometown tax system to fund a third season episode set in the town. In November 2022, after one member called socially unacceptable a plot in which Jashin tries to sell her organs to pay her debts, a council committee refused to release the 33 million yen by a tied vote of 7 to 7, settled by its chair. The city council approved the accounts on 30 November.
Crunchyroll has offered all three seasons since June 2023. We would recommend the series to viewers who enjoy a heroine as unpleasant as Jashin, who manipulates Medusa and mocks Pekola.
