I Would Die For This Show
If you watch the show subbed, you’re in for better writing. But I implore you, if you want a combination of some genuinely good voice actors with some of the corniest dialogue ever written, watch the 4Kids dub. It’s got all the 4Kids-isms, which can be annoying, but can also be a real good time. Again, the cast SELLS it.
The original Yu-Gi-Oh’s weird, Egyptian elements fascinate me. They don’t really come up in the rest of the series, apart from a bit in GX. It’s probably some level of appropriation of culture, but this is a show about children’s card games. I don’t think anyone was expecting a nuanced and historically accurate depiction of ancient Egypt.
If you like the card game, watch the show. It just makes the card game more fun, in my opinion. Be prepared that the first season just has no semblance of rules whatsoever. Which, in itself, is also great. I love seeing the insane crap they make up.
