When Earth's Mightiest Heroes Face the Animation World

Take a moment to imagine: a group of iconic superheroes in an animated series aiming to capture the grandeur of their comic book origins. "Avengers: United They Stand" is the 1999 animated leap for these heroes, notable for both its ambitious scope and its distinctive character designs. Despite mixed reviews, it holds a unique place in the canon of superhero animation.

The Story

The plot orbits around Ant-Man, who takes charge of an eclectic team of superheroes including The Wasp, Tigra, and more. Their mission? To thwart the insidious plans of Ultron, a classic villain hell-bent on mankind's destruction. Though not a direct adaptation from any single comic arc, it channels the spirit of Marvel's legendary stories into each episode.

Animation and Artistic Direction

This TV series showcases a bold visual style that blends traditional American comic aesthetic with late '90s animation flair. The armor-clad heroes come to life through striking color palettes and dynamic action sequences, albeit with some limitations due to the era's technology. The theme music, while distinct, could be seen as either charmingly retro or hopelessly dated depending on one's nostalgia threshold.

The Ideal Audience

"Avengers: United They Stand" is tailored for fans of superhero lore eager to see their favorite characters animate adventures across thirteen episodes. It's an accessible entry point for younger viewers new to the franchise yet equally resonates with older enthusiasts yearning for a slice of late '90s cartoon nostalgia. Be aware that there's no mature content here, just pure superhero escapism.

Not Too Bad

If you’re looking for something as well-written as Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, you won’t find it here. But if you’re looking for a pretty decent Saturday Morning Cartoon, you’ve found one! This is more something to throw on when you want to turn your brain off and watch some classic superheroes fighting supervillains. There is a little bit more to it than that, though.

The cast being relatively obscure heroes (compared to the usual line up of Iron Man, Captain America, etc) is interesting. How often do you get to see Tigra take center stage, or have Ultron as your most recurring villain? It doesn’t exactly go very deeply into any of these characters…except one: The Vision. They adapted his comic origin involving Wonder Man’s brainwaves pretty closely, and it’s really neat to see what they do with it. He’s the only character that, I think, they really try and analyze in a more meaningful way. As a Vision fan, that made me happy.

The voice cast does their job well. The animation isn’t anything astounding, but I do like the artstyle they went with. Some of the designs aren’t exactly my favorites; you can tell they were trying to make them as toyetic as possible.

All in all, you could do much worse when finding something simple and easy to watch.
