Top-notch unexpected hit

Even if the plot's a little thin, it's very difficult not to be taken in by the music and animation in this one. It's one of the few kids' movies I've watched with my girls and enjoyed it as much as they did. After a few watches, I'm still finding it just as infectious as the first time. I fear they've found lightning in a bottle, and it might be very difficult to duplicate this kind of magic.

Gonna be, gonna be golden

I don’t know what else there is to say that hasn’t already been said, but I'll say it anyway. Rumi’s journey of self-acceptance is incredible to follow from start to finish. The soundtrack has been stuck in my head for months (Takedown is my personal favorite), and the fashion and attention to detail might as well be its own character. I do wish that Mira and Zoey’s characters had been explored more, and I wasn’t the biggest fan of Jinu, but overall, it’s quickly become one of my favorite movies and gets better with every rewatch. I’d recommend this to fans of Trolls: Band Together due to both films exploring the realities of what it means to be in a boy/girl band; Turning Red and Encanto due to those films similarly exploring intergenerational trauma and personal growth; and Jentry Chau. vs the Underworld due to the focus on Korean culture, in addition to also exploring concepts of family, friendship, and the supernatural.

K-Pop and Combat

From the first few minutes of the film, I was fascinated by the well-defined characters of the three heroines. As soon as they sing the first song on the plane, I was charmed, and what follows is perfect! The Saja Boys group has their charm (without a doubt), their song "Soda Pop" is memorable from the chorus; the rest of the story is perfectly well written. Between solid friendship, forgiveness, loneliness, dreams, combat, and self-acceptance, this anime mixing Korean K-Pop music and battles against soul-thirsty demons perfectly reflects what a teenager can go through nowadays. I recognize myself in the three different characters of Rumi, Mira and Zoé. Can't wait to see the sequel!

For info, Netflix has officially announced the sequel K-Pop Demon Hunter 2 for 2029.
