Four necessities, one slow burn: what “Flavors of Youth” actually does

There’s a specific kind of animated confidence in anthologies. “Flavors of Youth” earns yours by treating its vignettes like a single memory, then letting food, clothes, and streets do the emotional heavy lifting. The film runs just 75 minutes, but it still manages to feel like you walked through three different eras without leaving your seat.

It also comes with serious production pedigree: a Japanese-Chinese co-production, directed by Li Haoling, Jiaoshou Yi Xiaoxing, and Yoshitaka Takeuchi, with CoMix Wave Films and Haoliners Animation League behind it.

The Story

“Flavors of Youth” adapts the tradition of “four basic necessities of life” into three storylines, each centered on a different form of belonging: food, fashion, and home and transit. The segments follow separate protagonists, but the engine is the same: small, daily decisions that become regret, then become resolve.

In The Rice Noodles, Xiao Ming’s connection to San Xian noodles becomes a family chronicle, shaped by a shop that rises, disappears, and reopens. A Little Fashion Show follows Yi Lin and her sister Lulu, where performance pressure turns into a strange kind of sibling education. Love in Shanghai moves through cassette tapes, injury, forced separation, and long-term consequences, ending with two lives re-meeting on a simpler horizon.

Animation and Visual Identity

This is where the film wears its intentions openly. Critics singled out the polished background art, and you can feel why: the cityscapes behave like characters, turning architecture, shop interiors, and fashion spaces into mood machines. The animation approach prioritizes texture and environment, so even when character motion feels less muscular, the world keeps doing emotional work.

Production-wise, it’s a co-production between CoMix Wave Films and Haoliners Animation League, which helps explain the overall visual cohesion across segments. The soundtrack and pacing serve the anthology rhythm rather than drowning it, letting the “taste” of each story linger.

The Ideal Audience

This film fits best if you like sentimental urban stories and you don’t need a plot to do all the emotional labor. With three chapters and a tight 75-minute runtime, it’s accessible even if you normally bounce off anthology formats.

It’s not a kid-only movie, either. Themes involve family loss, violence by implication, and abuse, including a segment where harm occurs within a relationship, so consider it more teen-and-up than family-safe blanket viewing.
