There’s a specific kind of animated confidence in anthologies. “Flavors of Youth” earns yours by treating its vignettes like a single memory, then letting food, clothes, and streets do the emotional heavy lifting. The film runs just 75 minutes, but it still manages to feel like you walked through three different eras without leaving your seat.

It also comes with serious production pedigree: a Japanese-Chinese co-production, directed by Li Haoling, Jiaoshou Yi Xiaoxing, and Yoshitaka Takeuchi, with CoMix Wave Films and Haoliners Animation League behind it.

“Flavors of Youth” adapts the tradition of “four basic necessities of life” into three storylines, each centered on a different form of belonging: food, fashion, and home and transit. In The Rice Noodles, Xiao Ming’s connection to San Xian noodles becomes a family chronicle, shaped by a shop that rises, disappears, and reopens. Love in Shanghai moves through cassette tapes, injury, forced separation, and long-term consequences, ending with two lives re-meeting on a simpler horizon.

3 Geschichten, die inspirieren...

Als ich diesen Anime zum ersten Mal gesehen habe, haben mich die Dialoge zutiefst bewegt. Drei Geschichten von drei verschiedenen Charakteren, die ihr Leben im urbanen China erzählen. Jeder Dialog ist entweder eine Lektion fürs Leben, eine Erinnerung oder Musik - kurz gesagt, Momente, die wir alle täglich in unserem Alltag erleben. Eine schöne Lektion fürs Leben, und ich denke, ein Teil von uns erkennt sich in jeder der Geschichten wieder.

Einer der Sätze aus einer der Geschichten, der mich berührt hat (weil ich denke, dass wir diesen Gedanken mindestens einmal in unserem Leben haben): "Das Leben ist keine Kassette, man kann nicht zurückspulen und zurückgehen, mein Herz leidet schon so lange unter einem so brennenden Schmerz. Mir war nicht bewusst, dass ich dich auch leiden ließ. Warum habe ich nicht auf deine Stimme gehört, als noch Zeit war. Aber ich weiß, dass wir, falls wir uns eines Tages wiederfinden, unseren Traum dort wieder aufnehmen können, wo wir ihn aufgegeben haben... Ich hoffe es mit aller Kraft, mit all meiner Verzweiflung...".
